Embracing Quiet Moments with God

Some mornings, I feel useless in prayer. I sit down to pray and nothing comes to mind. Usually, everything but praying comes to mind. I do all the things I should do to get it right.

  • Open my Bible
  • Write in a journal
  • Give all my cares and thoughts to God

Some days, I just sit there. The worst part is falling asleep in the middle of it. I can’t think of anything more useless than that.

Today, was one of those days. After hours of trying to pray, I had to get to work.

Later, I apologized to God about the whole thing. Then, I remembered trips to my Grandma’s house.

When I was growing up, I didn’t have the “cool” grandma who wore blue jeans and went to basketball games. My grandma wore dresses. I don’t think I ever saw her in a pair of sneakers. She worked in the garden, cooked from scratch, and drank coffee out of a saucer. The only activities I remember doing with my grandma were yardsale huntin’ and puzzles.

Most of the time, I was just there. Sometimes, I played with the dog. I usually brought my own things to do. But there was nothing eventful. Today, I realized how much my grandma appreciated me coming over to her house.

She didn’t wear blue jeans or listen to rock ‘n roll, but she loved spending time with me. Most of that time involved searching for the edge pieces of the puzzle. I didn’t have to be a basketball star or perform on stage. Sitting in her living room was enough.

I think prayer is like that too. When I show up, I don’t have to have important scriptures or eloquent words. He enjoys spending time with me. True, I might fall asleep. Peace does that. Sometimes, He give visions, and, other times, He gives rest.
